QuestionHi: I have a 7 months old labrador retriever. She is fine and healthy. Very playful indeed after the sterilisation and also very affectionate. i want to ask you, is that we have to restrict the food intake after sterilisation. previous time i was feeding 3/4 bowl. i heard that after sterilisation we have to reduce the food intake. is that true? after hearing this from the vet, i have reduced the food intake to 2/4 of the bowl. is this right? cause my bitch "maxy" is begging for more food. so can you tell the proper way to my enquiry. thanks for your time and god bless you!!!!
AnswerBecause she is used to getting more than you are giving her now it might be easier to gradually decrease the food ove a peiod of time to let her body adjust to the less amount. The reason the vet is telling you to reduce the food is so she won't gain a lot if weight, which tends to happen to all sterilized mammals.
However, you also have to remember that she is still a growing puppy and I tend to disagree with the vet about reducing the food intake of a growing puppy because you are also reducing the needed vitamins and nutrients her body needs to grow properly.
I hope you are at least giving her vitamins to comepnsate for this. You might want to consider the Raw Foods Diet or a natural diet that would be better for her weight wise and nutrient wise. There is a lot of information on the internet regarding this and I feed our lab only raw foods and homemade foods and treats.
I hope this helps,
Brightest Blessings
