walking my new lab pup

Question
Hi there, we have a 10 week old yellow lab and we live in an apartment.  I've read its ok to have labs in apartments as long as youre able to take them on long walks.  However, our pup doesnt seem to want to take long walks... after a block or 2 (thats usually how far I get with her) she just stops and wants to go back to the house.  I hate pulling on the leash to get her to keep going in fear of hurting her.   I know she's not tired, because once we get in the front yard of our buildings she's all ready to run and play.  Why doesnt my lab want to walk with me?  =(

Answer
Hi Mike,
10 weeks isn't too young to go two blocks, but my guess is that your pup isn't comfortable with the new surroundings.

One thing you can do to help this is to carry her the first two blocks, then walk her home.  At 10 weeks, she could be starting a fear period.  That is a bit young, but different dogs do different things.

Please do not pull on the leash, but rather encourage her by using treats or toys.  Patience is a must here as you do not want her to be afraid because you are impatient.  Lots of praise and gentle pettings help.  Keep yourself upbeat and if you do get frustrated, take a break.

At 10 weeks, she doesn't have all her vaccinations, so I would be careful taking her to places where other dogs go, but you do need to get her out and about for proper socialization.  If there is a kennel club in your area, you might want to look into puppy kindergarten classes for her.  These are fun for pups and owners and are great for socializing.

If you have further questions, let me know.
