Question
we bathed our lab yesterday evening (she has been increasingly more aggressive about scratching herself the past few days).  We used the usual dog shampoo as in the past but this morning she was broken out with large bumps all over including her head and entire body.  Never have seen this before, any recommendations for treating this?  She is about eight or ten months old, has been spayed and has shown no signs of this ever before.  Any ideas?  thank you so much!

Answer
Pitch the shampoo.  Give her another bath using nothing except water.  Baths usually cause more problems than they solve.  Brush her every day using a soft bristle brush.  By fall, when she starts a major shedding, you should be able to use a wire slicker brush.  Feed her a commercial chow passing tests using AAFCO methods and little else.  Most dogs will thrive on most brands.  Some dogs may need a table spoon of liquid cooking oil a day with the cheaper brands.  For fleas, use one of the effective, modern creams or drops.  I am using Revolution on my dogs, but some of the over the counter stuff is good too.

If she doesn't clear up in a few days, better call the vet.
