8 YEAR OLD LAB DOESNT LIKE ANY OTHER DOG

Question
WE JUST BOUGHT A NEW PUPPY (ABOUT 9 WEEKS OLD) AND EVERY TIME THE NEW PUPPY GETS NEAR THE OLDER LAB, THE OLDER LAB GROWLS AND SOMETIMES EVEN SHOWS HIS TEETH.  HE'S BEEN LIKE THIS TOWARDS OTHER DOGS. WE JUST WANT THEM TO BE ABLE TO PLAY WITHOUT ANY AGGRESSION. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO KEEP THE PUPPY CONFINED IN ONE AREA FOREVER, BUT WE ALSO DON'T WANT THE PUPPY GETTING HURT OR WORSE INCASE OUR LAB BITES. WHAT SHOULD I DO? PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

I would also suggest obedience training for both dogs.  For now, you will have to work with the puppy at home, limiting the sessions to only a few repetitions at a time.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
