Question
Hi, I have a very over weight lab of 11 years old. She suffers from arthritis in her back legs and hips so I am unable to exercie her. I am unable to get diet biscuits for her in the country we live but am unsure how many grams she should have of the ordinary dog biscuits. on the bag it says 500 grams plus for her size.
Thanks
Debbie

Answer
No need for the diet biscuits.  Just feed less of what you are.  If you are feeding  500 grams, try 400.  Unless she loses a little after a week, cut back more.  You want a feeding level where she is losing a few pounds a week until she gets down where she should be.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
