loose stools

Question
QUESTION: I have an 8 year old chocolate lab.  She constantly has loose stools.  We feed her Natural Balance duck and potato dry and natural balance turkey roll (a few pieces added to food).  I am also mixing in rice.  Any suggestions.  She has allergies to most food and this food seems to work, but the loose stools concerns me.  Any ideas????

ANSWER: I would cut out everything except duck and potato chow.  The fewer things she is eating, the less likely one of them will be causing a problem.  There is no need to give a dog anything except a decent chow.  If that doesn't help, you could try a venison or fish based chow.  Has the vet done blood tests to determine what she is allergic to?

How are other things going in your life?  If you are highly stressed, your dog will sense it and that can cause loose stools.  I am only pointing out the possibility.  I won't try to help that.

QUESTION: She is allergic to brewers yeast, vension and peas and a bunch of other things.  I will try eliminating the turkey roll and give her only dry chow.  Do you think I should add rice or pumpkin.  She has been spayed.  She also chews her feet constantly.  I give her Benadryl.

Answer
I have more confidence in the common brands than the premium ones such as Natural Balance.  Any decent chow shouldn't need anything at all added to it.  If she has food allergies, the fewer things she eats, the better.  Pumpkin is largely undigested, and rice would skew the balance toward carbohydrates.
