Sad Eyes and Giving Away My Lab

Question
Hi Jen,

I'm just wondering if Labradors normally have sad eyes or if this is because they are really sad?

My lab has sad eyes and I'm not sure if he was not enjoying his life with me in the city.  I left him with my parents where he can have lots and lots more room to run (I usually leave him on chain here because of the limited space and his chewing) and more attention from my parents.  And also for me to give more attention to my other three dogs (that Lab was such an attention hog).

I'm very sad that I have to leave him with my parents.  How quickly do dogs adjust to new environments?  They're not total strangers to him since my parents visit me a lot.

Thanks.

Answer
Labs have very soulful eyes, so they can look sad.  I doubt the dog is truly sad though.

I think large dogs like Labs do need more room to run and chaining a dog is not a proper life.  It will take a little time to adjust, but the dog will learn it's new routine soon enough and be happy.

The dog will be fine.  Most likely you are sad and miss the dog, but dogs don't think that way.  He'll be much happier with your parents.
