Question
We rescued a female black lab, was told she was 3. she'd just had a litter of puppies. Everyone that looks at her says she's closer to 2. My question is this: We got her in 2/10 and since that time, brown hair has become noticable on her legs, and white on her tummy. Is this an indication that she may be younger than 2? She gets 1/2 boiled egg a day and her coat looks like oil has been wiped on it. Everyone comments on her beautiful coat.

Answer
There is absolutely no way to tell a dogs' age unless you have been with the dog since birth or buying it from a breeder.  Vet's will often look at their teeth as an indication as their incisors will wear with age, but unfortunately they also wear with neglect and abuse.  But once adult teeth are in (by 7 months) there are no other indicators.

People probably think she looks younger because she looks healthy, which is a good thing, sounds like you have given her good care.  2 or 3, it's just about the same.  Pick one, give her a "birthday" and enjoy her!
