Question
is there any difference (apart from appearance) with the three colour labs. if so which is best, behaviour wise.etc.

Answer
The dog guide school I raise puppies for avoids breeding chocolates.  They say the chocolates tend to be more hyper and have more hip problems.  That doesn't mean there aren't great chocolates.  Not a whole lot of difference between the yellows and blacks.  The yellows are more tolerant of the hot sun.  Black dog hairs usually show less on your clothes.  Labs are terrible about shedding.

Puppies require large amounts of time and money their first year.  Often they do not grow up to be what you expect.  One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue dogs.  These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them.   You may find a rescue near you starting at
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
