Question
Hello Labman,

I just bought home a male rottweiler lab mix who is 6 month's old and was neutured today. I already had an 8 month old female german shepherd lab mix who is spayed.

They seem to get along great but after a few minutes of play the boy is constantly trying to hump the girl!
Should I step in and stop him from trying to have sex with her even though they cant have kids or should I just let them be and let his hormones run their course?

Thanks.

Al.

Answer
As the hormones in his body decline, it may be less of a problem.  Actually it could be more about status and rank.  Females do it too.  Usually it is best to break it up, but not that important.  She will stop him before it goes too far.

What you really need to do be their top dog yourself.  The dogs see all the
people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in
the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by
reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/
