QuestionHello - We just got my mom (who is extremely active) a yellow lab. Growing
up we had 2 chocolate labs that hiked and hiked with us, and loved walks. We
got Tinder for my mom at 4 months (her first 4 months she lived with the
breeder and the other pups that were not bought). Tinder is behaved - house
trained, LOVES other dogs. When there are other dogs around she will go on
walks, but when it is just her she does not like to leave the house - my mom
has to coerce her by rewarding her for going 200 yards with a little treat. She
is doing everything she can to get her to go walking with her, but it takes a
lot. and sometimes she will just not go. This is the first lab we have even seen
do this, and we are wondering if you have a any solutions for us. (other than
get my mom another dog - as Tinder loves when other dogs are around to
play with!)
AnswerThis sounds like a problem caused by a lack of early socialization. Some dogs won't be comfortable with things they didn't do before they were 12 weeks old. If the breeder has unsold pups at 4 months, perhaps they should rethink breeding.
This is not a problem I have ever had or even remember reading about. I have a stock answer for young puppies that won't walk on lead which is a common problem.
If getting out in front and coaxing doesn't get a puppy moving, try dropping behind it and running by in baby steps calling ''Go, go, go!'' in a happy, excited voice.
That always gets 7 week olds moving, but I never tried it with a 4 month old. Your mother may also want to drive to a quiet area at first. Part of the problem could be the scary traffic and strange people. if that doesn't help, get back to me and maybe I can think of something else to try.
