Question
Hi there, I've a 9 year old Golden Labrador who is overweight. I've cut back alot of food but am unsure of how much he really should have i give him a combination of wet and dry food later in the afternoon.. Is this good or not good for him? Please let me know i want him back to his old self again. Since being overweight he is not as active and playful. I do realize he is older now but he should still be at least a little active shouldn't he?

Answer
I need to ask a couple of questions.  What brand of dog food is the dog eating, and how much daily right now?  Then I can tell you if the amount is appropriate.

At 9, you should take the dog into the vet for a full work up.  Once they are Seniors, it's best to have them checked fully (blood panel etc) at least every other year.  Have the vet specifically check the thyroid.  My 2 older labs have thyroid issues and one pill 2x a day helps them ALOT and it's not very expensive.

Once you know if the dog is healthy, get it back to a proper weight, he should want to be somewhat more active.
