New Lab puppy

Question
Hi there, I am going to be getting a new lab puppy mid december.  As I work all day but already have a dog at home (9yrs) will it be okay that the new puppy is in the crate that long?  I know for their age it should only be 30 min or so.  We have all the love and activity level for one but I have to work (single mom).

Please let me know my options.

Answer
I am afraid you will have problems leaving it that long.  I have had very good luck leaving new puppies 4-5 hours, but 9 hours is just too long.  If you can't make it back, see if a neighbor or professional dog walker can give the puppy a mid day break.

If you can't work anything out, perhaps you shouldn't get a puppy.  If you force a puppy to stay in a crate longer than it can go without elimination, it them loses its instinct for cleanliness.  Fouling the crate becomes a difficult habit to break.
