Question
I just got a four month old yellow lab. We have had him about a week. He is a
great dog and has a good disposition. The only thing we are having trouble
with is walks. He seems reluctant to go sometimes. Mostly he will go along
after a gentle tug, but sometimes he plants his feet and doesn't want to go
anywhere. I thought it might just be unfamiliar surroundings and noises, but
it seems to come and go. We know not to drag him along or jerk on the leash.
What can we do to encourage him or help him enjoy the walks and what
should we do when he plants his feet?

Answer
This may improve as he has more time to settle in.  It may be more of a problem if he has spent too much of his past life in a kennel and not been out in the world much.  If getting out in front and coaxing doesn't get a puppy moving, try dropping behind it and running by in baby steps calling ''Go, go, go!'' In a happy, excited voice.
