my golden is 14 months and i am still haveing a problem walking him

When I walk the dog, I am having trouble with him pulling and barking at people that are outside, he also goes crazy when a car comes by.  I have used a gentle leader and a pronged collar but I am not happy with the results.  Any ideas?

I have been a great fan of the Gentle Leader, but am rethinking it because ot the way my 3 month old Lab continues to pull in it.  I recently attended a training seminar with a big name trainer.  She liked the technique of stopping and walking backwards when the dog pulled.  We had about 75 young dogs, and it really seemed to work well.
