Question
I just got a 4 mo old chocolate lab. she is very good and calm. I already have a 2yr old mini dachshund. she is a very loving dog also, but she wont leave the lab alone and has showed her teeth and snipped. the lab doesnt respond. i know the dachshund is prob. jealous but is there anything i can do to help them get along better? I am afraid the lab will eventually snap back and hurt her. they are both female

Answer
Hello Lesley and thank you for your question,

Sadly there isnt much you can do, Just be sure the lab doesnt pick on the little dog, make sure they each have there own foods bowls/water bowls/toys and beds/crates as well. Be sure to shower both with attention *Not favoring one over the other when it comes to petting and cuddles is a wise idea also. When the little dog is bothering her is she play biting or really biting???? my jack russell terreir/labrado retreiver and boston terrier play bite/nip each other hard somtimes my litterer dogs hang from the loose skin on my labs neck during agressive play... ow! but she doesnt mind she just bites them back and they tear around the yard full trottle until there pooped out. If she is snarling and truely being agressive tell her no, and maybe take her to another room and pen her theren for a minute or two. THe lab may react sometime and can kill the little dog. i always have a fear in my mind that one day Haylie(my labrador retreiver) will just snap and kill Luke(my jack russell terrier who is always... always challenging rank and biting her), Just be sure you don't award the little dog with a treat as a distraction by any means for getting her to leave teh puppy alone it would make things worse. The little dog is Queen of the castle for the past months or years and she thins this oter dog is going to try take her poosion as queen so to speak and make her... Prinsess(weird medifore I know but please read on), so she is trying to tell her ahead of time hey I'm the boss or queen here and not to bothering challenging her because she is the boss! But someday will come anyway its inaverdible that the bigger dog will try take the rank of queen or boss dog and will probally get into a bit of a tussle with teh little dog with bared teeth and chasing until she gives in and says ok. ok your the boss your the queen!!! But the little dog may enver give in an they will live like my older dogs(lab ret' and jack russell) bickering all the time day or night inside or out, wreasling and snarling/flipping each other over/showing teeth/neck grabbing ect. You see my jack russell terreir is the boss not my lab and he challenges her all teh time to show hes the boss and she can not take that posion as long as we are a family lol, tmy lab will eventually just put her face down and walk away and not play with him anymore once he's made his point, she does try take the ring leaded job but never gets it lol, the boston terreir I haev is just a baby I'll be intresting to see who fits where when she is older. I hope this explains what is going on somewhat, It is sometims best to let them stick it out and see whos the boss of the household other times its best to seperate them in time outs ect. to pervetn injury to one or both dogs. If you need and more inforamtino feel free to ask I'd be happy to help.
