Overweight Lab...

Question
Hi there, I have two labs. Both are 4 years old and one of them is overweight. They go out for walks everyday and eat what I would call an average amount of food. The overweight one is not as active as my other lab and I was wondering how much exercise they should be getting daily? I usually take them out in the evenings as I have a baby and can not handle a buggy plus two dogs as they pull me all over the place. I can just about manage them on my own, just not with the buggy. I am seriously concerned as I am scared to take him to the vet as I dont want to get in trouble but hate the fact he is obviously over weight.
I am goign to get hold of some halti's as I really would like to be able to take them out for longer during day time hours.
Sorry this has come out as a bit of a ramble, but I seriously am at a loose end and need some advice.
Thanks very much.

Answer
Hello Stacey and thank you for emailing,

I hav a bit of a problem with my labrador being overweight when she was 2 years old..I free fed my dogs at that time...left food down all the time and they ate when they wanted...well Haylie(my lab) gained like ten pounds couldnt feel her ribs or anything and she was lazier then ever! What I did was then change to portion feeding(putting the bowl down twice daly with the required amount for weight loss according to the 'lite' kibbles feeding instructions) I then an with her once or twice a day a few times up and down teh back allery or front sidewalk....this cuppled with a walk with my other dog which lasted 5/10 minutes daily got the weight off easily...I also made sure to paly frisbee or fetch with my dogs after work everyday until she lost the weight...it takes some effort on the owners part but its for the dogs health and wellbeing. Also for weightloss go out and like I said get a Lite kiblefor verweight or less active dogs feed according to the bags instructions as to how much to feed for weight loss...or feed him any kind of kibble(just not a kibble for very high energy dogs...high in calories!) and feed for how much he should weight... ie he is 90 pounds and should be 80 feed enugh for an eighty pound dog. Keep away all table scraps...a limit biscutsand bones to one or two small low fat ones daly...if you give rawhides give smaller ones so the dog istn etting as much fat and calories daily as before but still keeping his teeth in good health. If you can follow the program the weight will bedropped in about 4/8 weeks depending on how vigorus you are with the exercise and diet plan.(please excuse if i've written She instead of He in a few places...I always think were talking about shes as I have two female dogs and one male lol everyone I know has female dogs so I get a bit mixed up sometimes Sorry) Hope this helps if you need anything else don't hesitate to email agin.
