Question
We adopted our puppy at 8 weeks.  We enrolled him in a puppy class.  We are now in the intermediate class.  For the most part, he seems to be a good dog.  He is very good around my 5 and 8 year old girls.  The problem lies with my husband.  He works 6 days a week and is usually home late.  Every morning when my husband comes downstairs the dog immediately jumps up on him tugging at his robe.  My husband says off to him numerous times, he will not listen.  He then proceeds to nip hard at him non-stop.  He is relentless with this.  He is not biting hard enough to sink teeth but enough to hurt and make my husband angry.  He is the one who play the rope tug of war with him.  Could this be part of the problem?  What do we do when he will not stop doing this.  It is happening every day and is causing lots of tension in the house.  Help...

Answer
Some obedience classes are total failures, being about teaching the dog its commands, rather than teaching the owner to play the role of top dog.  A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands a treat. It might be better to discontinue the tug of war.  If he continues it, he must win every time, and at the end of the game, keep the rope and put it up.
