Question
I have an 11 year old choc. lab.  Approx twice a day over the past six months, he makes a very loud cough as if he has something stuck in his throat.  It is very loud.  Nothing ever comes up and he is healthy otherwise with a good appetite.  I thought maybe kennel cough but it seems to have lasted far too long.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Kevin,

I've seen many Labs coughing loudly - as if trying to clear their throats. Medically this is not necessarily a symptom of any disease.

However, if your lab has just started doing this - then i suggest you make a visit to a vet. Do you make him run? How vigorous have his exercises been since he was a pup? What he ate and played back then will reflect on his lungs and their capacity today.

best,
Sam
