13 week lab crying at night

Question

Alfie 13 weeks old
I have had my 13 week yellow lab (Alfie) home now for 4 weeks, I have used a crate from the first day I brought him home. He has never had an accident inside the house or inside his crate as he cries and barks to be let out. My question is although he goes outside at around 11pm for a wee and poo his still cries and barks around 3-4am, I do come down to him to let him out and he does his business outside, however when I return him to his crate he then constantly barks, is this normal? or is it because he knows that when he barks I'll come? although he is letting me know he needs to go out he is also learning that noise is getting my attention. Should he by dry by now and sleeping through? Also he gets out for a 45 min walk/run morning and night, however he seems to have never ending energy levels, is this too just a puppy thing?

Answer
Yes, he should be sleeping through the night, but perhaps he will later.  if you are leaving him water at night, stop doing it.  Perhaps his crate is too warm or cool.  Try reducing or adding more bedding.  Our puppies never have bedding or water.

You could try what I have found works with new puppies to get him back to sleep.  At bed time, with a new puppy, I have found lying down in front of the crate like you were going to sleep and speaking softly to it, or singing, until it settles down and goes to sleep works very well. Follow the pattern, a period of active play, outside to eliminate, and then into the crate.
