Yellow Labrador Retrievers

Question
I read years ago that if you breed two yellow labs they can only produce yellow puppies since yellow is the recessive gene.  Is this true?

Answer
It is true that yellows to yellows will always produce yellows. But yellow is not a recessive gene to black, it's a recessive epistatic gene that masks the color on the hair shaft, which is why you can have yellows with black pigment and yellows with chocolate pigment.

You can use this chart to review the different options for color when breeding:  http://www.blueknightlabs.com/color/coatcolor.html
