housebreaking lab puppy

Question
QUESTION: My lab puppy is not quite 10 weeks old, but she seems to be going backwards in her housebreaking. I take her out to the bathroom as soon as she awakes or is taken from her crate, right after she eats or plays and as soon as she starts sniffing.  She never goes longer than 1/2 hour between going out, sometimes going out several times within a half  hour. However, I'll bring her out and she will urinate a couple times and then come in the house and urinate again within 5 minutes. Tonight, I was still cleaning one accident and she was doing it again. It seems like it's becoming impossible to keep up with her. What am I doing wrong?

ANSWER: Some pups get it right away some don't.  She's only 10 weeks.  You can't expect her to have it right yet.  Make sure you are keeping the puppy in a smaller controlled area.  For instance, she needs to be blocked in the room where you are at.  Maybe you have a kitchen/family room with a door to the outside, block that room off from the rest of the house and try to spend ALL your time there with the pup.  You may also want to put the pup IN her crate while you are cleaning up a mess, to keep her confined while she is out of your sight.  Are the accidents happening when she is out of your sight, or right in front of you?

QUESTION: Sometimes right in front of me, sometimes when my back in turned, so I don't think she's trying to hide it.  I was just concerned because it can be within minutes of just going.  Thanks so much for your quick response!

ANSWER: You could talk to your vet about having her checked for a urinary tract infection.  Sometimes little girls get them because their butt is so close to the ground and they are still too small to properly clean themselves.

If you can catch urine in a tupperware, you can just take the urine in for a sample, not even being the pup.

QUESTION: Please help!  It has been a month since I spoke to you and things do not seem to be getting any better.  She is 13 and a half weeks old and still doesn't seem to get the housebreaking. She is very sweet and very intelligent, but she just doesn't seem to get the housebreaking. She is crate trained, is brought to the same spot and given a treat and praised each time.  She always goes immediately when brought outside, but still will come in the house, squat and wet shortly thereafter. She doesn't hide it, but seems to know it is wrong because she'll get a very guilty look about her. When I'm cleaning it up, she'll come and sit as close as she possibly can to the point that I have to move her to finish cleaning. She won't wet in her crate, but thinks nothing of laying on the rug that I just cleaned. She doesn't even make an attempt to get the door, although she has been great for weeks when it comes to going to the door to go out for a bowel movement. I can't understand what is going on.  She isn't our first puppy.  I've trained a black lab and a Sato previously without any difficulty, so its not like I'm new to it.  Any suggestions?  thanks so much

Answer
Did you take her to the vet to check for a urinary tract infection like I suggested?

Otherwise, unfortunately, your best bet it to seek advice from a person that can work with you face to face and help figure out what will work for you puppy.  Look for a trainer or a behaviorist.  Your vet should have recommendations for people who work in your area.
