runny nose

Question
Hi, I would like to know if you have ever had a problem with runny noses with any of your dogs. I have a 21/2 month old black lab puppy, who I have had to the vet three times already, they have given him antibiotics, and this does not seem to be working. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Faith:

You may have a food allergy with the pup.  The first thing I would try is changing the diet to another brand of dog food.  Dogs, like humans, can have allergies ranging from food allergies to dust, mold, pollen, etc.

If you find the diet change does not provide results, I would recommend allergy testing.  There are multiple medications available for allergies in your dog.

I would also ask that you be sure your vet deals mainly with "small animals" such as dogs and cats.  I have found, living in a rural part of Kentucky, the vets in our area will generally specialize (cows, horses, etc.).  My vet does not deal with many "farm-type" animals, and seems to do a better and more thorough job with my dogs.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
