Question
Hi, I have a 7 yr old male lab and a 2 yr old female, I want them to breed, This is her 3rd season, she has been in kennels for previous 2 seasons as she was too young. She is now on day 11, I dont think they are mating, he seems to just lick her where she is swollen, do you have any tips, they are always together.  I also have a male dachund at home that I am keeping away from them

Answer
The breeding of any dogs shouldn't be taken lightly.  Labradors as a breed have several inherited health problems, and those who decide to breed need to put those concerns first and foremost in their mind.

Have both dogs been tested for Hip and Elbow Dysplasia and given clearances by the OFFA?

Have both dogs been checked annually for eye diseases, as well as doing the blood test to see if either parent carries the gene for Progressive Retinal Atrophy?

Are you involved in anything with the dogs that proves their worth as animals that should be bred.  Being loving companions does not make any dog worthy of being bred.  Conformation titles, obedience titles, hunting titles, that's what I mean.

Are you prepared to lose your girl during the whelping when something happens to the pups and you do not get to the e-vet soon enough?  Are you prepared to deal with puppies that die or are born with birth deformities.  Are you prepared for puppy buyers to come back to you because the dog you sold them now has crippling hip dysplasia and will cost them thousands to make the dog's quality of life better?

If you have done all the clearances and prepared thoroughly for the breeding, then maybe you are ready for a litter.  If you are dead set on breeding them, there are a number of breeding books and whelping books available on Amazon.  Put in the key words, Canine Breeding and Canine Whelping. I suggest you buy them and read up.  This is not an undertaking where you get advice from an on-line advice board.
