Agressive with other dogs

Question
We have had a rescued black lab for a couple of years now. Prior to this incident she was not great around other dogs but when handled carefully would socialize. The incident I mentioned is her being attacked by two dogs in our backyard that ended up in a rush to the vet and plenty of stitches. She now is scared to death of all dogs especially medium to large dogs. Her fear turns to barking, growling and raised hair. She looks quite ferocious and is scary to other pet owners who pass by. How can we fix the situation and not get any dogs hurt? Also she is not fixed and lactates constantly (we believe she is drinking her own milk) and we would like this to stop as well.

Answer
The first step is to have her spayed.  It can make a dramatic difference.  Then you need to give her better leadership.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. In a severe case like this, you may need a private trainer.
