Teaching my dog to accept friends visiting me

Question
I have a 1 year old lab/husky mix.  I just acquired Charlie and he is really quite well mannered and I was really surprised when a friend came over the other night and he just sat and growled at him.  He wouldn't get close to my friend, just growled.  How do I train him not to do this?  Charlie is a male and has been neutered.

I have had several different types of dogs and this action is totally different for me.

Any advise you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Answer
Start out controlling any stress it gives you and warmly greeting your friend.  Dogs are very sensitive of our emotions and take their clues from us.  Have your friend not make eye contact with him, not let his teeth show, not tower over him, or put his hand over the dogs head.  Have him offer the dog a treat.

Sometime it is hard to say why dogs take exception to things.  Work with him as above.  Strong leadership on your part will help too.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
