eating carpet

i have a 3yr old yellow lab who is adorable.  how do i stop him for chewing/eating holes in my carpet when i'm in a different room?  he has plenty of "toys" etc and is well fed.

How long is he left alone when he is getting in trouble and eating the carpet?  Giving a dog toys doesn't preclude it from being bored.  I have 5 and still, toys aren't fun when there isn't someone to play with.  You may also want to look into obedience training.  Is the dog crate trained?  You may need to go back to basics and put the dog in a crate when you can't supervise 100% of the time.  That's what we do with puppies, and if you have an adult that doesn't understand the rules, you have to start from Step 1 and retrain them.
