recent agressive behavior - jealousy?

Question
We recently acquired a black lab, about 2 years old.  He seems very smart and until recently very happy and loving with all family members.  He's very attached to my husband and follows him everywhere.  Recently he's started growling and even barking if I come near my husband in the evenings while they are together in the living room watching tv.  If he is across the room, he will come between us. I'm concerned that he's being jealous and territorial.  Can this behavior be corrected?  He's even shown similar behavior towards my special needs daughter but not towards my son.  What do you suggest?

Answer
The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/ For more on being top dog, see http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm

At 2 years old, it will be slow going, but still doable.  That Dog breeds site has some additional material on dogs and children you need to read.  .
