Question
Hi. Is it true that by feeding my 9 month lab retriever adult food since he was 6 months will stunt his growth because adult food lacks calcium? In other words I have ruined my pups natural growth...Also what would happen if I switch him back to pup food? Thank you Sara

Answer
The truth is puppy chow has more calcium than large breed puppies need.  In some cases, there is so much the body can't absorb all it needs to build sturdy joints.  The less rich adult chow will only delay reaching the genetically programed size.  This is a well proven technique for avoiding joint problems.  Switching back could lead to a growth spurt and damaged joints.

It is also very important to keep the growing puppy lean.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
