Question
W are dogsitting a friend's lab, and he seems too skinny and does not get enough playtime outside. I grew up raising labs, and from my experience, they need a good portion of food and a lot of exercise. He's hyper (Toby), so they are always putting him back into his kennel. I always thought if they had too much energy, that means they need more exercise! He's a big lab, approximately how much would he need to eat per day? (1 year, 75 lbs, ribs can be seen a little, neutered)

Answer
How much is hard to say, perhaps about 4 cups a day.  The ribs are the real key.  A dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest.
You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is
different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog
must have its food adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide,
http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  So it sounds to me like he needs to be eating slightly more.

Some Labs are hyper no matter how much exercise they get, but more wouldn't hurt.  Certainly disproves that neutered dogs are fat and lazy.
