injured claw

hi my lab has injured his right innermost claw. The casing/nail seems to have split open (like a pistaschio nut shell) and the inside bit is exposed - bright red. He is constantly licking it what should I do?

Normally they heal up on their own.  If it really seems bad, you could check with your vet.

Prevent future injuries by keeping the nails short.  On yellow Labs, you can see the pink quick and can cut back from it.  With black Labs, you must cut a little off more frequently.  Exercise on hard surfaces grinds them down eliminating the need to trim.
