Chewing paws

Question
My 3 year old male yellow lab has a habit of chewing his paws for hours at a time during the night. His lapping is so loud it will wake us up from a deep sleep. Between his toes and around his pads is often red and relatively void of hair by this point. Our vet told us that he has allergies and that it is caused by itching. We have tried everything from dietary changes to mineral salt baths to drugs, sprays and creams to get him to stop licking. Nothing has helped. It's so bad that he soaks his bed which now stinks (despite regular washing) causing his fur to also stink. Could this be a behavioral thing? How can we get him to stop licking?

Answer
Buy a washable dog bed cover, and wash it every week, maybe using a second rinse with the load.  Cut out the baths, and brush him a couple of times a week or more.  If the vet hasn't prescribed anything, give him a Benadryl capsule or 2 every night.

Did the creams you tried include Cortisone or Hydrocortisone?

Vets can do blood tests, but they are expensive.  If nothing else helps, you may have to do it.  They identify what he is allergic to.  Once you identify it, it may be something you can eliminate.
