Fiber in dog food

Question
What is a good % of fiber to look for when choosing a dry dog food?  We recently adopted a Katrina dog (retriever mix) as a play mate for our (lab mix) who we now have on the same dry dog food.  The vet said to slowly wean him - which we did the first week.

Answer
Wise vet.  Sudden changes in diet can cause digestive upsets.  I don't pay much attention to the percentage of ingredients in a dog chow.  What I look for is a large data base of long term health of dogs on a chow.  Most of the commercial dog chows do fine.  The concentrated, meat based ones have less fiber producing smaller, firmer stools.  This is more important to the one cleaning than the one producing them.  The cheaper corn based chows have more fiber producing larger, softer stools.  I have seen good results in large samples of dog with either.

If your other dog is doing well on what you have been feeding it, likely both will continue to do fine on it.

You will find very different opinions elsewhere.  Remember, much of the information on dog food comes from people selling a product.  I am not selling anything, nor do the service dog schools where most of my information comes from.  I feed Pro Plan chicken and rice.
