QuestionHello,
Planning to move into a new home on rural farmland in June-July. Two kids (M-F) ages 8, 6.
We want to get a Yellow Lab, probably a pup, female, spade.
First question: good choice?
Second: what to expect? (we are dog lovers and former dog owners, just not at present).
Third: how do solid hardwood floors fare with a dog?
Thanks.
AnswerCan't be too far wrong. Most pups will not be spayed. The vets like to wait until 6 months. Glad you plan to take such a responsible step.
I had grown up with dogs and had other ones before my first Lab. I was not prepared. Lab puppies can be much worse about biting and chewing, and very strong willed. I strongly advise a crate.
You may want to skip the puppy stage. It is much easier, and cheaper that way.
One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue
dogs. These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home
to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them. You may
find a rescue near you starting at
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.
