Question
our nine month old lab seems very dependent on being in sight of us 24/7. She is crate trained but whines when we leave room for any reason. when she is out of crate, she wants to follow us room to room. This poses a problem when we walk thru the living room because she wants to jump on furniture and chew pillows! Since I am a teacher, I will be home all summer with her. Any suggestions, please. This is a wonderful service!

Answer
Labs are people dogs, they want to be with their people.  Mine follow me from room to room, just to sleep on my feet.  That's great that you have the whole summer to work on this.  Keep her with you.  That way you can supervise 100% of the time.  You can teach NO when she jumps on the couch and redirect her to appropriate toys when she goes for the pillows.  Make sure she had PLENTY of dog toys, chews, kongs, and gets bones for chewing treats (raw hide or marrow bones are great).  Keep rooms that you don't want her in closed off with the door shut or stategically placed baby gates.  Dogs learn appropriate house-behavior by living in the house WITH you and having you teach them what's correct behavior and what's not.

The crate should ONLY be used for when she is sleeping at night or when you leave the house and she has to stay home alone.  It's NOT meant to keep her in when you are home.
