Question
QUESTION: Hi
I have a years old Labrador he has begun bitting us without any provocation, for example:- when he is sleeping and we asking him to get aside he bit me on my foot badly that i had to get 4 stitches; Secondly my sister was patting him and he was liking her face and suddenly bit her. What should we do? We have another dog a pom he keeps on pulling the poms tail and keeps on biting him. We got the pom after 1.5years after we got the lab.

ANSWER: Whenever a dog goes through a severe personality change, it's best to have a vet do a full exam.  If nothing is wrong, then you must go to obedience class with the dog.  Sometimes when they bite or look like they are in charge of the house, it's because the humans have not set up rules and limitations and taught the dog that the humans run the house.

QUESTION: I have tried to get the obedience training for the Labrador from 2 different professional trainers but he listens to the trainer but once the trainer goes he is back to square one. One of the family member is present and an active participant in the session, but it does not help.

Answer
Are YOU doing the training with the professional trainer instructing you what to do and say?  Or do you hand the dog off to work with the trainer and watch?

Dogs learn quickly that they can take advantage of certain humans.  It's common for a dog to not listen to its owner but when in the hands of a trainer who is holding the leash and giving commands, the dog is perfect.  I experienced that myself when I started training my dogs for competetive obedience.

Every member of the family needs to be consistent in commands.  Also try looking up on the internet "Nothing In Life is Free" for a method of training.  It teaches that the dog will get nothing for free.  If it wants dinner, it needs to sit.  If it wants anything it will have to obey commands first.

Also, some dogs require constant training.  1 6 week course is typically not sufficient.  On-going training the rest of its life is usually necessary.
