Question
I have a Lab that is 1 year old. When I got her for Chistmas, shewas missing her right ear flap. My question is; What makes  dogs lose their ear flaps at birth.

Danniel

Answer
It isn't very common, and I can't say.  It could have been a genetic defect, but more likely something went wrong in a difficult birth.  There are too many people breeding dogs that don't have a clue what they are doing.  Some of the very basic questions I get are ridiculous.  When these people encounter a problem whelping puppies, they can't handle it properly.  I am not sure how a puppy could lose an ear, but anything is possible.  The breeder or your vet may have better answers than I do.  You could even search a book such as Successful Dog Breeding, by Chris Walkowicz, DMV, 1994.
