Exercise for an 8 month old Lab

Question
Hi, I have an 8 month old Chocolate Lab.  I used to take him for long walks and even run him for 2-3 miles per day.  I have noticed when he gets up sometimes it looks like his hips bother him.  He is a pure bred and in his paperwork it doesn't show any problems w/ hip dysplasia.  Do you know how far/long of walks you should take a lab for? Is running him at 6-8 months too early?? I just don't know the correct amount to be walking him now and I don't want to walk him too little either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Answer
Most people advise not doing much running and jumping until the dog is at least a year, if not 2.  Extensive walking is OK.  You may want to quit if he shows any sign of discomfort or begins lagging.

It is possible you have done some soft tissue damage which may or may not heal once you cut out the running.  Only in the most severe cases of hip dysplacia does it show up that young.  There pano and some other things they may grow out of.  It might be well to let the vet check him out.
