Lab and new pup

Question
I am at my wits end.  I have a 15 month old lab and an 8 wk old German Shepherd, the shep plays well with the older lab, but the lab is obsessive with the pup, the pup can't walk an inch in the house without my lab play biting  with the pup and my lab starts playing too rough.  My lab used to like sitting outside in the evenings and now I can hardly get my lab out the door to use the bathroom once done he is back at the door and begging to be back in the house. My lab constantly hounds the poor pup, the pup wants to take a time out and chew on a toy, but the lab takes the toy away and wants to play even more.  The lab is obseesed with the new pup and will not go to another room unless the pup is there,  If the pup eats then the lab eats, if the pup drinks, the lab drinks.  The lab does nothing else all day but hound the poor pup.  Its okay for them to play for awhile, but the pup gets tired out and wants to wander around or play with a toy. I don't know what to do.  I have at times put the lab in his crate to get some peace and give the pup a break, but then I think my lab thinks that he has been bad.  He's not really being bad, its just that he does not know the meaning of stop for awhile and give it a break.  I give him the stop command or off/leave it, but he continues and I have to pull him off of the pup because he gets to rough and the pup will yelp.  The pup does enjoy the play time except when my lab starts to get to rough.  If I give them both a chew bone, the lab will drop his and take the pups away. How do I get them to play for awhile and then give it a break for awhile... a time out without one of the them thinking they were bad and being put in their kennel. Please help will appreciate any advice.  My lab is also like this with other dogs, play all the time and will not listen to commands.  He is very stubborn and at times will ignore me when I tell him to come and will keep going, he knows the command for stay and come because when alone in the house he does it just fine for a treat.  He is neutered, but I think he is being a bully and demonstrating his dominance

Answer
Hi Jody,

Even though your Lab may 'look' all grown up, he's still a pup in his head. He's just over a year in age.

Labs have unlimited energy - they tend to go on playing for hours. You are right in assuming that if you put him in a leash or in his crate - he'll think he's done something wrong. (on another note - never put your lab in a leash or in a crate if he has done something wrong - it's like putting a human in prison - can break his soul)

The best thing i can suggest to you is that take time out to play with your Lab pup. And give him lots of exercise - i'm talking about vigorous work outs. Long walks, runs, furious football or maybe even a chase.

This will make sure he gets tired. It's very important to get him to relieve his energy through playing. If your lab is searching for a companion in the Shep - i think you should intervene and become his companion. Play with the lab - and play till he doesn't drop.

I think if you get your lab to relieve all his energy through some work outs - he will slow down his interest in the Shep.

Good luck - lemme know how it works out.
