coughing

My 4 year old chocolate lab has a cough that sounds as if she is choking or gagging on something. She's had it for 2 days now. It sounds like she has a hairball. Is there anything over the counter that I can give her?

Has she had kennel cough vaccine?  If not, maybe the vet should see her.  Otherwise I would let it go a few days.  I haven't heard of anyone giving a dog any kind of cough medicine.  Likely it would be OK, but there are some things Ok for us that kill dogs.  Just today I was in an information session and the vet said even a few grapes or raisins will kill a dog.  Other things are chocolate, Tylenol, and acetophen.  Many over the counter medicines include pain killer.  All but aspirin are dog killers.
