OUT OF CONTROL Black Lab

Question
WE just moved in with my father-in-law and he has a three year old black lab(male), he is a pure breed and has been fixed, but he is still out of control. We have a 2 year old Chocolate lab female who is really good and obedient. The male black lab is OUT OF CONTROL. He never seems to calm down, he barks compulsively for no reason, When anyone is out side he jumps up on his hind legs and barks and tries to go through the window, he constantly prances like a horse does. If you try to calm him down or pull him off of something he just freaks out more. He will nip at you for no reason, If he is in his kennel he will bark and try to shake the kennel apart, We have tried a shock collar but he keeps doing the same thing, he even was out playing catch once in the back yard and put his canine tooth through his tongue and didn't even seem to notice it. We can't take him for walks, he will either walk you or try to attack other dogs.We can't have people in the house unless we lock him in the basement but all he does is sit at the top of the stairs and bark and try to to get through the door. Is their anything we can do at this stage short of getting rid of him???

Answer
Some Labs are better bred and easier to control.  Others take more work.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
