Lab hates water

Question
I was wondering if there was any way to get my purebred chocolate lab to like the water.  We live right next to Lake Michigan and would love to be able to take our dogs swimming.  My Australian Blue Heeler loves the water, but my lab seems to be afraid.  She was two when we adopted her and we suspect she was abused.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not all Labs love water.  Since twice I have taken a Lab nearly a year old to visit its mother's place on the lake, and they didn't like the water the way their mother did, I suspect it is their early experience.  My puppies usually don't have much chance to swim, and several have refused to go in the lake with the other dogs.  

Take her along.  Let her watch you and the other dog enjoying the lake.  Dogs are highly susceptible to peer pressure.  They want to be part of the pack.  Keep talking to her in a happy voice.  Try throwing sticks for the other dog to retrieve from the lake.  It might be better if you could start with a pond or inlet that didn't have waves.  Just give her time.  Do not force her.  Who knows what kind of a bad experience she may have had in the past.
