adopting a labrador

Question
we are considering adopting a Labrador, as we don't want a puppy, what age do you think would be right, we thought about 4 years. we are both 50, and have no children at home now, and have time to give a loving home to a rescue dog.

Answer
Hi Susan,

Adopting a Lab at an age of 4 would mean that he needs to be fit and very well cared for. I cannot comment on how well dog homes take care of their dogs. Also a 4 year old dog will be difficult to retrain as per your commands.

However, i recommend you keep a pup - and go thru the diaper changing phase of children again. It's a wonderful feeling and it lasts only 2 months or so. You'll feel younger and it'll bring back memories of bringing up your own kids. It's wonderful - trust me. Will keep you both oldies busy. :)

Best,
Sam
