Question
Hi Labman,

Today we adopted a 3 1/2 year old neutered yellow lab male. He seems so far like a wonderful boy. I was just wondering if you were familiar with the behavior of dogs who are transitioning in to a new family. He is not a victim of cruelty, he was loved by 2 previous owners who just found themselves not able to care for him any more. He is my first dog and he is barking a lot I have taken him on 4 walks ( thinking he needed to go out which it seems he did) but I was just wondering if there are typical behaviors of animals in transition, and what they are so I don't feel like I am doing some thing wrong. Also what can I do to make it easier on this loveable boy?

I really look forward to hearing from you, and I want to thank you in advance.

Answer
The barking may be a response to new thing in his new home.  He may settle down after you have had him for a while.

Give him plenty of love and attention, but not too much food.  Labs love to eat and are often over fed.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  Any of the common brands of kibble should be fine.  The best thing is to stick to what he had been eating if you can.
