QuestionMy family and I adopted a 5 year old yellow lab in April. He was a turn in at the local shelter. The owner after 5 years decided they had pet allergies and turned him in. He got Kennel Cough and was very sick. I wanted him anyway. On his forms it said that he was a backyard dog, not house broken, stayed in garage, not leashed trained. He has been the MOST precious part of our family. He is the best! I took him to our vet and she told me he is very over weight. He weighs 110 lbs. He has worn down elbows and I wonder if he is only 5 turning 6 on June 20th...anyhow. He is very strong, pulls me all over, wants to run and I am scared that he will get hurt. I walk/run him every night for 30 minutes. He eats 2 cups dry diet beniful in the am and pm. The vet said that was fine. We do not feed him table scraps, but I think he was a scrap fed dog. recently I have noticed that he has been limping after our run/walks. My husband told me that I should run him only on grass and not far..actually he said I should make him walk. I love this lab so much and want him to be healthy and happy.. can I give him any advil or other medicine for the pain?
AnswerDo not give him Advil, Tylenol, or any of the other modern pain killers. You an give him a buffered aspirin, a regular 325 mg tablet every 8 hours.
Your husband is right, don't run him on pavement. 4 cups of chow sound like too much for an over weight dog unless it is a weigh management formula. If he losing weight? compare him to this link, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx
If he pulls you on walks, use a head collar. The leading brands are Promise, Haltie, and Gentle Leader. They have a strap going around the dogs nose looking something like a muzzle. They work by pulling the dogs head around. No other way gives you such great control with so little force.
