Puppy limping

Question
Hi I have a 7 month old lab mix puppy. She is very active very happy and seems fine but recently she is limping. Her back right leg seems to be stiff after extended play or sleep. I am feeding her premium food and glucosamine and chondroiton treats. Is this typical? Growing pains, or just playing to rough? I'm concerned but don't want to over analyze this.
Thanks, Connie

Answer
If this has been going on very long, see the vet.  Also watch the calcium.  If the food isn't less than 1.5% calcium, it may be too high.  Calcium rich treats could add to the problem.

Switching to an adult chow early for the larger breeds, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints. again make sure it is less than 1.5% calcium.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
