My 3 month Black lab doesnt want to walk

Question
Hi Jen I have a 3 moth old black lab. He is doing great on the crate, eating, going out to potty and stool. He is playful and with lots of love. When it comes down to go for a walk it when the problem starts. He does not mind the leash but he won't walk. I have to pull him until he starts walking and the he stops and I pull again until he starts walking. I have separated 45 min morning and afternoon for his walk. I spoke to a Petsmart trainer he told me to be on the look out on his tail if he puts his tail between his legs he is scared and if he does not he being a brat. I think he is being a brat. I hate pulling him because I think it will hurt him but I still need to take him on a walk because he need the exercise. If he does not walk he will start barking. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Answer
I read somewhere that puppies often don't want to leave their home, so when I was training one of mine to walk, I picked her up and walked to the corner, put her down and we walked home.

You can also keep treats in your pocket and see if you can encourage him forward.

If you have a friend or a neighbor with a dog that walks well on a leash, see if you can go with them.  That's how I got my last 2 puppies trained.  They would walk with the adults.  One pup loved it immediately.  One was nervous and scared, but would go since the big guys were going.

As far as needing exercise, 12 weeks is still YOUNG.  Playing in a yard and the house is plenty of exercise for a little pup.  I would get him used to the leash, and consider it a success if you get to the corner and back.  Don't plan on doing 45 minute walks with a 12 week old.
