Question
My wife and I are looking into adopting a 4 month old siberian husky from a local humain society shelter. he is in foster care right due to a broken leg which the vet is saying should heal completly however he says that the pup will have arthritis for the rest of his life. How will this effect him, as we are an active couple and are looking for a dog we can take camping and hiking. Also what kind of medical care will he require? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Dear Obie,
Well congratulations on rescuing a dog, we need more people like you. You are right to wonder what his injury will allow him to do, or not to do in the future. Only time will tell really, I have seen dogs break legs and never really have further trouble until very old. Huskies are very active dogs witha high pain threshold. I have one with arthritis in the lower back he has had it since 2, but other than having a very clumsy gait when he runs he has got to 10 just fine. Thus far I have never had to give him any special medical care. Its one of those things you can never be sure of really and you will just have to seek vets advice along the way if you think he is developing problems.

I hope this helps.
