bulldog luxating patella

Question
I have a 3 year old bulldog and just go the news from the vet yesterday that he has a luxating patella in both hind legs.  One is a grade 1 and the other is a grade 3.  He hasn't shown any signs of pain or discomfort in either leg.  I noticed you had recommended glucosamine to other owners with the same condition and would like to start him on that.  What dosage would you give him?  He weighs 50 pounds now.  If you can't recommend a dosage, do you know where I could find out?

Thanks

Answer
Vet's love Bulldogs. They plan their next vacation around Bulldog clients I think.

If the dog isn't exhibiting any lameness or pain, he's going to be fine for quite some time. I doubt you'd find any Bulldog that wasn't a grade one in both patellas. Yes, glucosomine is a good idea for any Bulldog in fact. There will be dosage directions on any that you buy. I suggest that you go to an online supplier like Foster & Smith for your supplements. It's much less expensive than going to a vet.

I use NuVet products on my dogs.  They offer a glucosomine supplement that is excellent quality but a bit pricey.  There's a link to their site on my site at www.omaibulldogs.com.

The URL is drsfostersmith.com. If you have any questions, you can ask them directly as they are both veterinarians. Good luck.
