filter choices

Question
Hello.  We are new (about 1 year) fish lovers, goldfish in particular.  We have learned about how messy they are through trial and error, so now we are in a quandry about what type of filter to purchase for a new tank we are adding to accomodate our fish since they have grown some.  Currently we have two Rena "sit on the back" filters each appropriate for a 55 gallon tank, both on our 55 gallon tank.  Our double filtration barely keeps up with their mess, so we are adding a 20 gallon hex tank in our hallway to move the smaller breeds to (like the bubble-eyes and the fantails).  We recently purchased an Aqua-clear filter from the pet store with the advice of one of their employees, but I'm not sure if it is up to par, though he insisted it was the only way to go. It's the appropriate size for a 20-30 gallon tank. We really need to get an expert opinion on the best type of filter to use for our fish.  They are so messy that cycling is a complete disaster, even when we are keeping careful track of the levels and cleaning regularly.  Right now we do a water change once a week on our big tank and a small one daily in our little tank, but the 20 gallon seems to be having a lot of haze in the water, and I'm just not sure if the filter is a good one.  We need an educated opinion about brands, without the petstore selling agenda.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
It seems like you are doing a good job with your filters. If you try an Under-gravel filter that might help. Canister filters are sometimes confusing but they are amazing at cleaning the water some do 300 gallons per hour or more.

With filters it's all a matter of trial and error...it's really tough.  Gold Fish let off so much ammonia that it's difficult to filter it all out.
